If you’ve been a car accident you need to think about what you do after the crash has occurred. One step that is recommended is taking photographs of all the vehicles involved in the crash, the crash site, lanes of travel and any traffic control signs or systems. This will provide you with documented evidence of the crash. You should also take photographs of physical injuries from the crash and skid marks where the crash occurred. If you are able to get pictures of property damage from trees or light poles in the area it may help your case in the long run. These photographs can be used by a personal injury attorney as evidence of how the car wreck occurred and who was at fault.
You should also contact the police and request a report. Although police often investigate more serious car accident, if they do interview you it is best to cooperate with the investigation. You will come out of the accident with evidence to what happened that can be later used by your attorney. Accident reconstructionists can piece together how the crash happened without having been there at the time of the crash to determine who was at fault.
Once the police have done their investigation. they will write a report. The report will list all the parties involved, witnesses, insurance coverage information by each driver, the location of the wreck, a diagram of how the wreck occurred and a summary of the investigation. You can always retain a copy of the investigation from the police department and you should ask for a report number, the name of the officer, and where the report can be picked up. Maintain the report number for your reference and the officers name to later retrieve a copy of the police report.
