Common Car Accident Injuries
Common Car Accident Injuries
You may not know immediately after a car accident what your injuries are and how serious they may be. If you are in a car wreck, it is impossible to predict how your body will react afterwards. Whiplash can be a normal part of unfortunate pain that comes with being involved in a car accident. It is possible you could have broken bones or serious bodily injury from the collision. It is important to take it easy after a wreck and monitor potential injury for any worsening signs. Seeking treatment after an accident should be your main priority on your path to recovery.

Some common injuries after a car accident are broken bones and skin lacerations. These types of injuries are easier to diagnose and treat because they are visible on an x-ray. The treatment for these injuries has been perfected over time. Expect to be treated in an emergency room, or by an orthopedic physician.

The most common type of injury after a car accident is soft tissue injuries in ligaments and muscles. These type of injuries cause muscles to stretch. Soft tissue injuries are difficult to diagnose because they don’t show up right away. A doctor at an emergency room may have you leave your office visit without mentioning any signs of soft tissue injuries. . These type of injuries usually do not manifest themselves for weeks or months after the accident. They result in serious amounts of pain even though the injury is not apparent on an x-ray. A soft tissue injury will take longer to heal than a broken bone because of the amount of stretching by the ligaments. Even worse for the injured person is the fact that painkillers and surgery provide little relief.

Other terrible injuries that result from car accidents are serious back and disk injuries. Disk herniations, slip discs and back injuries are all common after car accidents. Disc injuries, however, are visible on an MRI. But due to the costs of an MRI, one might not be done after a car accident. It can takes months and even years before an MRI reveals a disc injury. Most health providers won’t resort to an MRI until it is absolutely necessary. For more serious back injuries, back surgery should be considered.

Another common types of car accident injury is bruised or broken ribs. Ribs can break even in a small impact crash. The force of being pushed backwards or sideways can cause your ribs to break. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of treatment that can occur for a rib break or bruise other than dealing with the pain.

Head injuries can also occur in a serious car crash. Traumatic brain injuries can become permanent or last more many years after a crash. More concerning is the fact that if traumatic brain injuries are not treated properly they can affect brain function and cause headaches and sleeping difficulties. Brain injuries can often go undiagnosed for weeks, months, and sometimes years.
