How Many Construction Workers Die Each Year?

It is very common in the United States for construction workers to fall to their own death. Over a 33 year period of time falls made up nearly half of all construction worker deaths. over 50% of construction workers who were killed did not have access to fall protection.

Between 1982 and 2015, 42% of fatalities were from falls. 54% of construction workers did not have fall protection such as a fall arrest system. The majority of workers without fall arrest systems worked for residential building contracts and roofing contractors. 32% of the falls were 30 feet or higher. 20% of the deaths took place in the first two months on the job. Fall protection should be provided at 6 feet or higher and is required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The construction industry leads all industry in total worker deaths. In 2015, 937 worker deaths occurred which was the most since 2015. The construction industry however is fourth in highest fatal injury rates after the agriculture industry, forest industry and fishing and hunting. From 2014 to 2015 the construction industry saw an increase in fatal occupational rates. 39.7 out of every 100,000 workers in the roofing industry suffered a fatality.
